Day 50/51: September 10th

Kim: THE BLACK CAT (1941)

“AKA Kim watched the wrong Black Cat.

No. Seriously. I thought I was watching the 1934 one for like the first half and couldn’t understand why everyone said it was so good cause this one…not so good.”

Bob: KING GHIDORAH (1964)

“The debut of Godzilla’s greatest foe, the golden 3-headed alien dragon. A weird series gets delightfully weirder. Aliens, Japanese gangsters and assassination plots, and some all out monster battles. Also notable when the twins translate for Mothra convincing Rodan and Godzilla to fight Ghidorah and save the world in that it indicates Godzilla is a sentient intelligent creature and just being a dick with his destruction rather than animal instinct.”

Cody: SLEEPAWAY CAMP II (1988)

“Fuck it, this was absolute fun trash. Not much to it but a joyous slash filled with bodies galore!”

Brien Gorham: THE OBLONG BOX (1969)

“This complex revenge thriller with Vincent Price and Christopher Lee uses a post-colonial lens to weave together elements that include curses, premature burial, family madness, grave robbing, and disfigurement. Throwing all those ingredients into one stew could be a disaster, yet somehow it all works rather well here.”

Amy Herring: CREEPY DRAWSTA

” (YouTube/LavenderTowne). An anthology of creepy pasta stories narrated while they are illustrated. I watched a feature length amount of these today (5) and they were good and creepy! One even gave me the wiggins later on in the day.”

Robin Lindsey: GHOULIES (1984)

“Even though I’d seen Ghoulies II 50 trillion times on cable during the 90s, I never watched the first one. Fairly standard for Charles Band at the time. Not a whole lot of depth to anything, but still a fun movie. Debut of Mariska Hargitay. Everyone starts or ends their career in horror. 😉”

Jay Walker: ATTACK OF THE KILLER DONUTS

“Lol terrible. Much like Dead Sushi only a lot less slapstick and without the …charm…? If you’re gunna watch this just do Dead Sushi instead.”

Day 49/52: September 9th

Kim: HALLOWEENTOWN II: KALABAR’S REVENGE  (Library DVD)

“Decided to go a little lighter for today’s movie. Cute film. You had me at Debbie Reynolds. Great one to watch if you have little kids and they’re not quite ready for the full Leatherface experience.”

Bob: MOTHRA VS GODZILLA  (1964, Library DVD)

“One of the better entries in the series (I’m upt to All Monsters Attack on the whole, that’ll be later). Lots of fun, well-made battles and just a joy.”

Cody: “Dr. Terror’s Gallery of Horror (1967). An Amicus styled anthology without the Amicus name, Gallery of Horror is one of the B moviest B Movies I’ve seen in a while. This one has a star studded cast including Lon Chaney Jr. John Carradine and Rochelle Hudson alongside iron man Roger Gentry (who pulls quadruple duty in the segments). They provide legitimacy to a super silly anthology that has some of the most hilarious endings I’ve seen be they intentional or unintentional. Available on Prime and worth a watch for some fun!”

Brien Gorham: TIGERS ARE NOT AFRAID (2019, Shudder)

“This movie wrecked me a little. Beautiful and brutal and haunting and heartbreaking. The comparisons to Guillermo Del Toro are not unwarranted. The last time I had that strong of a cathartic reaction to a film was Pan’s Labyrinth.”

Robin Lindsey: SUMMER OF ’84 (2018, Shudder)

“I really enjoyed it! I remember that this got a lot of Stranger Things ripoff talk when it came out, but I don’t think that’s really fair. Where Stranger Things is *super* in your face with the culture references (I still really like it, don’t get me wrong.), this was much more just a slice of life. The main character was likeable and the friendships were believable.

I very much want to talk about how it wrapped up and will gladly do so in the comments if anyone wants spoiler talk. 😊”

Amy Herring: THE STUFF (1985)

” I enjoyed this much more than I expected. Fun effects. Very “Body Snatchers” vibe.”

Jay Walker: DEAD SUSHI

Ok, why am I just learning about fantastic fest?!
Anyhoo… this is batshit crazy. I mean, it’s bad, and the FX at times look like a 6th grader made them in MS Paint. It’s silly goose goofiness with lots of blood though. A lot of Japanese films are in the same vein of just absolutely bizarre in interesting ways. If you recall that fact, this movie almost makes sense.

Day 48/53: September 8th

Kim: MA (2019)

“Octavia Spencer has to be having a blast.”

Bob: LUCKY BASTARD (2014, Prime)

” A fan of a particular porn star wins a contest to be filmed having sex with her. He’s a little too weird and is rejected so he takes everyone out. Wholly unlikable people – but not charmingly so – make it a slog with a repetitious and One annoying set up. one of those flicks where it seems like those involved should know how a film is shot but the characters are so amateur at it it hurts.”

Cody: ALL THE COLORS OF THE DARK (1972)

” An absolutely insane Giallo flick involving Satan worship, psychosexual hallucinations and evil Bugle fingers. Definitely worth a watch and on Prime!”

Robin Lindsay: DEATH BED: THE BED THAT EATS PEOPLE (1977)

“I… am really not sure what I just watched. If it weren’t for the boobs and references to sex, this feels like one of those 16mm films that your teacher would spool up and show in English class in middle school. (Looking at you 70s & 80s kids!) One of those where it feels like a weird student film and you wonder how it got worked into the curriculum. Now saying all that, you should probably experience this movie. It’s on Kanopy if you have a credit to spare at the end of the month.”

Brien Gorham: THE HERETICS (Netflix)

“A girl is abducted by a cult and years later it seems they are after her again. I don’t want to say anything more because spoilers, but it has a nice twist half way through the film. I kind of dug it.”

Amy Herring: THE CHILD REMAINS

“I wanted to like this one and I’m just not sure if I did. There is a weird, vague tone to it that made me have a hard time taking it as seriously as it seemed want me to, yet not over the top enough to laugh at (except one part which I won’t spoil although I think it’s in the trailer). I had hoped for better. Put this one down as “meh with a dash of hmm.”

Jay Walker:

One Cut of the Dead (Shudder)

LOL. Okay, this one is pretty fun! It’s silly, but bloody, and short. Worth watching; and even if you don’t like it, it’s short enough that you won’t have wasted your time.

Day 47/54: September 7th

Kim: CRIMSON WATERS (2014, Prime)

” “I will kill my father. I will eat my brother. And I will have my revenge.”

This is an actual line.

Seriously, I think a group of LARPers may have just wandered onto a horror film set and they just went with it.”

Bob: PATRICK: EVIL AWAKENS (2014, Netflix)

” Remaking the first film, now with Charles Dance and the final girl of You’re Next! Where the Italian remake went full silly, this remake is more serious and restrained. Loved the look of the film. It’s well put together and I liked updating how Patrick communicates to the modern age. More work is also put into the characters. Of the three, this is the best. Although Still Lives is the far and away most interesting.”

Cody: STRANGE EVENTS (2017)

“A mix of Horror shorts of varying quality, this was was a let down. The premise is that all of these are taking place in the same universe but there is no connective tissue anywhere to be found. No wrap around in particular fatally wounds a promising idea.”

Brien Gorham: ST AGATHA (2019, Netflix)

” Creepy nuns run a convent for wayward girls in 1950’s Georgia. It has some really unsettling moments of nun torture, which shouldn’t be surprising as it’s a Darren Lynn Bousman film. No real great twists and turns, but an unsettling and sometimes creepy film all the same.”

Amy Herring: THE CHURCH (1989)

“Absolutely fan-freaking-tastic hilarious horror. Some of the special effects are so killer.”

Robin Lindsay: DAHMER (2002)

“I’ll keep this short… Jeremy Renner is good, the movie isn’t. 🤷”

Jay Walker: High Tension (Prime)
The tension is high 🤷🏻‍♂️ Not much to say about this one. It checks the boxes, but I wasn’t overly thrilled by it.
Pretty brutal; a good watch if you’re in the mood for an aggressive, violent slasher.

Day 46/55: September 6th

Kim: SLEEPAWAY CAMP III (1989)

“Whatever you’re thinking about a movie called, Sleepaway Camp III: Teenage Wasteland is probably right. Basically an excuse for silly kills of obnoxious teens. Also, seriously, busty girls do not just run around with no bras whipping their shirts off around each other.”

Bob: IT CHAPTER 2 (2019, Theatrical)

See my review here.

Cody: THE WITCHING SEASON (2018)

“A set of Internet shorts turned into a series on Amazon prime but combine into movie length. They actually come together pretty well and each segment is well acted, shot and scored. The gem of the series is “They Live Inside Us”, is actually set to be turned into a full length feature! Very fun, interesting and full of Halloween spookiness!”

Brien Gorham: DAY OF THE ANIMALS

” This is one that is worth checking out. It’s over the top in all the best ways, including a shirtless unhinged Leslie Nielsen. Made in the 70’s, it opens with a explanation that the earth’s ozone layer is being depleted which of course makes all the animals turn on humans. I was mostly rooting for the animals.”

Robin Lindsay: BASKIN (2015)

“I don’t think I was in the right mood for a surreal Turkish mindfuck movie, so I don’t feel like I can give it its proper due. There were some great character building scenes that really setup the main relationship and what may have been to come for one of the characters. Overall, though, I can’t say whether I liked it or not at the moment.”

Amy Herring: BELEZEBUTH (2019, Shudder)

“Great occult horror. Really enjoyed. Pretty harsh beginning, though! Nevertheless, I recommend it.”

Jay Walker: NEON MANIACS (Tubi)

“I’m probably gunna catch some heat for this, but I really didn’t enjoy this one at all.
I know, I know, it’s a pretty unanimously loved throwback, but it’s just not for me.
It had this Night of the Creeps vibe, and the goons were silly, but it just dragged on. Dumb plot, no gore, no real kill scenes except one, lots of dialogue, and the ending… just…
really? Come on 😂
I dunno. Maybe I don’t get it. I thought this movie was dumb af.”

Day 45/56: September 5th

Kim: IT CHAPTER 2 (2019, Theatres)

“Overall enjoyed. I think a bit long and not as tight or as strong as part one. Good cast, with Bill Hader being a standout amongst them.”

Bob: KING KONG VS GODZILLA (1963, Japanese, Library Rental)

“In both of their 3rd entries, the most well known Kaiju face off (before their rematch next year). Silly fun. Did have an annoyance in the American newscaster giving direct to the camera exposition right after someone else did. So much explained to us over and over.”

Cody: TERROR TALES (2019)

“NO.”

Amy Herring: THE RING VIRUS (1999, Korean, Youtube)

“I’ve now seen three versions and still like the American one best, by far, which continues to surprise me because usually that’s not the case. This one was super mild on horror, I would honestly just call it a mystery/thriller, so that was a bummer. Still, I liked it and found the difference in, and exploration of, various details in this version interesting. Thanks for the tip, Bob !”

Brien Gorham: GREEN INFERNO (2016)

“Cannibal films aren’t totally my bag and this one didn’t win me over to the genre. His typically stylized characters run the gamut from somewhat likeable to utterly detestable. Credit for the practical effects and a couple of good twists along the way.”

Robin Lindsey: IT CHAPTER 2 (2019, Theatrical)

“I know a lot of people are going to be seeing this, so super shallow overview. Overall I liked it. The casting of the adult Losers is so freakin’ SPOT ON. The only one I had any issue with was surprisingly Jessica Chastain.

Even though there is a super long run time, it felt like there was a lot to get to and they only touched the surface of most of it. Though at the same time, you felt the King narrative drag in a couple spots.

A couple of small cameos made me smile. If you liked Chapter One, 100% catch this one.”

Jay Walker: SLEEPAWAY CAMP III (Prime)
“This was the only one I hadn’t seen yet. First was fun, second was meh, and this one just got right down to business.
Early in I was like “damn she’s killed half the camp already, how are they gunna keep this going??!” But it delivered for the rest of the film 🤷🏻‍♂️
Pretty great, no BS, straight-to-it slasher. Way better than 2.”

Day 44/57: September 4th

Kim: DOWNRANGE (2017, Shudder)

“I enjoyed it. Maybe not as much as I enjoyed Midnight Meat Train, but I thought it was solid. Good acting and some nice tension built. Not reinventing the wheel, and a little silly at times, but entertaining enough.”

Bob: THE RING VIRUS (1999, Korean, Youtube)
“The other forgotten version of the RING (referring to the 95 made for tv one, my #5 of 100 days this year). This was released on TV in Korea. It’s a good take on it, remaking the Japanese theatrical version but adding back in a few book elements the other one took out.”

Cody: WE GO ON (2016)

” I can’t recommend this one enough! An eternally frightened guy tries to pay for proof of the afterlife to cure his crippling fear and skepticism. I’m not going to say anything beyond plot wise but this is a fantastic ghost flick. On Shudder and definitely worth your time!”

Robin Lindsay: SOUTHBOUND (2015)

” Since Radio Silence did the opening/closing segments I decided to check this one out. An ok low-budget anthology film. More little glimpses into the stories than anything with a full narrative.”

Amy Herring: ALONG CAME THE DEVIL (2014, Hulu)

” I wanted to write this one off as a bad imitation of The Exorcist (even with the old priest and the young priest) but there’s a small something about this movie. I don’t know if it’s the production or the (slight but interesting) twist, but this one managed to not just be only a pile of bad tropes (despite the abundance of them). I wouldn’t say it’s good … but it’s not as bad as I would have thought and I can’t quite decide why. I do feel like some elements set up in the beginning led nowhere and I’m wondering if that was just overwrought writing or if I missed something in some kind of prequel.”

Brien Gorham: CIRCUS OF HORRORS (1960)

“This is the most subdued of the Circus Three, making the title somewhat misleading as the horror is more psychological. This one tells the tale of an unethical plastic surgeon who uses his talents in a circus when he’s forced into hiding. This one is a bit of a slower burn, but it offers a fascinating commentary on beauty and the male need to own and control that beauty. It also features a young Donald Pleasence.”

Jay Walker: EVIL ED (Tubi)

An absolutely bananas, bonkers, boner bonanza of a silly story, loosely similar to Fulci’s “Cat in the Brain”. There’s a lot of quick nods to classic horror gems such as Truth or Dare, Evil Dead, etc.

This one was really dumb in a good, funny, enjoyable way; with tons of gore, homages, and yukyuk one-liners. Worth watching.”

Day 43/58: September 3rd

Kim: FOLLOW ME

“Jumped on Cody‘s bandwagon and gave this a shot. Actually enjoyed it too, but felt it took waaaay too long to get to the horror part. The first 2/3rds felt like a tourism video for LA. Cool idea though, and solid acting and chemistry between the cast.”

Bob: PATRICK STILL LIVES (1980, Italy; Youtube)

“Italian crazy pants remake/sequel – as is often the case for Italy and their really loose copyright laws. The basic part is still there – Patrick is a comotose patient with psychic powers. But now there way more sex and nudity and the kills are nastier. And nothing makes a lick of sense. So Italian.”

Cody: ELOISE (2017)

“I didn’t love this one but I did enjoy it! I love a good ol fashioned haunted asylum but it actually does a great job of playing with the premise a bit to keep things fresh. I enjoy Chase Crawford and it was a delight to see him get a chance to shine alongside the incredible Robert Patrick and Eliza Dushku. It does drag in places and honestly doesn’t give enough time to Patrick’s intriguing villain Dr. Greiss but overall it’s worth a go for Ghost story fans! Free to stream on Prime/Shudder if I remember right.”

Amy Herring: THE DEVIL BAT (1940)

“Bela Lugosi is fun to watch. He’s a “bad guy” I want to win!”

Brien Gorham: CIRCUS OF FEAR (1966)

“I really liked this one – and not just because it features Christopher Lee. It’s more thriller/mystery than horror, but it combines a bank heist with a revenge tale with a murder mystery and it all just kind of works together – clever movie with a great cast.”

Robin Lindsey: STRANGE BEHAVIOR (1981)

“This was also known as Dead Kids, and that’s what the title card on the Shudder version is. This was so-so. It started dragging a bit half way through and the opening kill made me laugh. But, it has some great scenes that redeem it. The party scene has to be one of the best from an 80’s horror movie that I’ve seen. 😁”

Jay Walker: ANDROID OF NOTRE DAME (Youtube)

“I see a lot of reviewers crapping on this Guinea Pig entry, but I thought it was great. I enjoyed this far more than Devil Doctor Woman & He Never Dies, although slightly less than Mermaid in a Manhole and Flower of Flesh & Blood.
This is more in the tech/mad scientist vein, but delivers on the expected gore from this series.
It’s a fun watch, and the story is captivating enough to keep you tuned in for 50 min. Worth checking out.”

Day 42/59: September 2nd

Kim: THE GRAVEDANCERS (2006)

“Dum duh dum dum DUMB.

Seriously. Like, how many times are we gonna watch assholes be assholes and then just wait for them to anger a spirit and die? Here’s a thought: if something seems disrespectful, IT IS! Don’t poke the spirits.”

Bob: READY OR NOT (2019, Theatrical)

“Fuck yes. Love a wide release going gleefully violent, bloody, and just damned fun. Samara Weaving is wonderful as the wide-eyed, over-reactive, blood-splattered bride forced to play a deadly game of hide-and-seek with her White-AngloSaxan-Santanist family. Had a freakin’ blast”

Cody: FOLLOW ME (2019, Prime)

” I came in with low expectations but this one was actually pretty interesting. It’s a very slow burn of a flick but it really does make the most of the found footage setting. I really feel like I’m watching annoying YouTubers vacationing and subsequently attacked by a Maniac. It’s free on Prime and my favorite found footage of 2019!”

Robin Lindsey: THE FIRST PURGE (2018)

“This is by far the weakest of the series. As a prequel, you know exactly what’s going on in regards to the government and the Purge itself. That portion of it is pretty much a rehash of the second movie. The main group of characters is just bland and there is way too much crappy CG blood and gunfire. I prefer the prior three movies.”

Amy Herring: OUIJA: ORIGINAL OF EVIL (2016)

” Loved this one! I am a fan of Mike Flanagan and as soon as I realized he directed/wrote this my expectations rose and I was not disappointed!”

Brien Gorham: VAMPIRE CIRCUS (1972)

“(thank you Daniel Hickeyfor the recommendation). Vampires. Demented Circus. Revenge. Hammer Studios. This movie hits so many sweet spots for me. The vampires are pretty monstrous in this and yet I still was kind of rooting for them a couple of times. Sometimes vampires gotta vamp.”

Jay Walker: DEMON WIND (1990, Shudder, Prime, Tubi)

Despite the name conjuring up early 2000s goatse references, I actually found this movie to be pretty enjoyable.
In a broader view, if you were told about the plot out of the blue, you’d probably be like “wtf that’s dumb”, but then also there’s BirdBox. Demon Wind is everything BirdBox should’ve/could’ve been and wasn’t.
They’re not exactly the same, so no spoilers, and this one has way more gore, body horror, and you actually see the demons 😂
Fun, gory, unique 80s cheese. Get at it.

Day 41/60: September 1st

Kim: NEXT OF KIN (1982, Shudder)

“I super dug this. Cool visuals, wicked soundtrack, with just enough ridiculous to make it fun. Shudder hasn’t been leading me wrong so far.”

Bob: WAR OF THE GARGANTUANS (1966)

“A sequel to Frankenstein conquers the world, a movie I’ve not seen and didn’t know was connected until after the movie. Two kaiju-sized humanoids fight out their differences. It is what it is, and is okay at it. Nothing special. Funny thing was the main woman saying over and over again her Gargantuan was a good guy as he destroys just as much as shit.”

Cody: DON’T LET GO (2019, Theatrical)

“Personally this movie frustrated me by both wasting its premise and its star David Oyelowo. Too many dropped ideas combine with a painfully slow pace and too many instances of “wow, this really should have been better” cripple this promising film. I will say it’s better than of of the absolute fucking garbage I have been watching so it’s a better option than some for when it pops up on streaming.”

Brien Gorham: GODZILLA KING OF THE MONSTERS (2019)

“Probably about 15-20 minute too long, but the monster brawling is a ton of fun. The movie has some stunning visuals to boot. I like the world building that they’ve done with this series. No spoilers, but the newspaper clips during the end credits give some pretty awesome hints at what’s to come.”

Amy Herring: OUIJA (2014)

“This ticked many favorite spooky movie boxes for me, including an appearance by Lin Shaye”

Robin Lindsey: CANDYMAN: FAREWELL TO THE FLESH (1995)

“While this does expand the backstory a bit, this one didn’t have the same feel as the first one, maybe because of the difference in relationship. Not a bad sequel, but I prefer the first.”

Jay Walker: THERE’S NOTHING OUT THERE (1991, Tubi)

“More cornball Troma “schlock”, with a really silly alien (?) trying to reproduce (?) with college kids vacationing at the lake house.
More fun that the Slayer, but it also didn’t have any Slayer songs in it.”
