“40 years ago, on Halloween night, Michael Myers murdered three people.”
Was it really only three? I can’t help it if that’s the first thought that flashes through my mind while watching the newest trailer for Halloween (2018). As is the nature of horror, each sequel of the franchise brings with it a higher and higher body count. The new movie, directed by David Gordon Green whose distinguished film credits include Your Highness and Pineapple Express, disregards all sequels. This means that Michael Myers will have killed only four people at the start of the new Halloween.
It’s an unusual tactic, particularly when your star has already returned for multiple sequels. In fact, when last we saw our star, she was busy being killed off.
Though unconventional, it does offer a balm to those fans sick of the constant stream of reboots and re-imaginings. Though if the film is successful, and something tells me it will be, we may see a whole new string of retconned movies.
The newest trailer, which dropped today, turns the focus on the original final girl, Jamie Lee Curtis’ Laurie Strode.
If there’s one message to take away from the new trailer, it’s this: don’t fuck with Laurie Strode. She’s back and she’s ready to take on any mask wearing killers that are unlucky enough to cross her path.
It does appear as though she’s assuming the mantle that Dr. Loomis (portrayed by the late Donald Pleasence in five films) played in later films. A harbinger, trying to warn people of the inevitable but dismissed as a “crazy old coot.”
As a lifelong fan of the franchise, and a huge fan of Ms. Curtis, I personally cannot wait for the film to release on October 19th. I’m excited to see how one of the original final girls of slashers has evolved into a final ass-kicking woman.
